Kahtoola Microspikes are the best — you can climb up walls with these things! They are easy to put on, stretching easily over snow boots of any sort, and they do not fall off mid-hike the way lesser spikes or studs often do.

Kahtoola’s biggest asset may be their Warranty & Repairs department. I recently had a 3 or 4 year old pair of Microspikes snap a connecting link. When I called Kahtoola to see about a repair, I was immediately connected to Cat, a cheerful, can-do young woman in the W & R department. Though my spikes were past the warranty period, Cat suggested a Kahtoola inspection & repair procedure and I was completely satisfied with the result. It’s rare that you can find a company that stands so squarely behind its product over the long term. I am now an enthusiastic, lifelong Kahtoola customer.

I’ve had mine for 10 years, or more, back when they were just 10 spikes per foot, and they still function great. All of the spikes have been worn down, 1-4 mm, but they still grip even ice on sloping concrete. Good on muddy roads too.
They are the talk-of-the-town; people always asking, where did you get those? I’ll definitely get another pair, maybe in another 5 years.

I can’t recommend these enough. After getting 5ft of snow in 48hrs, I was forced to walk everywhere for several days with absolutely no traction. I made it to the outfitter store, grabbed a pair, and never looked back. The real end game though, is that I use them over my wader boots; all seasons. Not only great for ice, but they grip to shale and give you traction on steep, muddy hills, and slippery stream bottoms. These have gotten me into fishing spots I would have never reached. I bought a pair for my dad who was making me nervous while fishing. Now he crosses and climbs up steep banks, no problem. He also uses his pair all year round and often reminds me that it’s one of the best gifts he’s ever gotten because it gave him back his mobility.

I have the style before this and they’re going on their 4th year of heavy use; at least every weekend. They’ve worn down a bit and have stretched a little, but still give me great performance and don’t seem like they’re going to fall off. I’m thinking of getting a new pair and keeping my current ones as backup or for friends to use.

    Great product
Walking in the lakes with the other half who is definetly a fair weather walker but with these micro spikes from Kahtoola on she had the confidence to tackle some big winter yomps in tricky conditions lots of ice and thin layers of snow.
Not cheap but worth ever penny.

My wife and I purchased our first pair a little over a year ago and have used our MICROspikes on almost every hike this winter when we weren’t wearing our snowshoes. They are absolutely amazing! On one hike our trail turned to a sheet of ice with some very bad steeps. While other hikers were detouring into the woods to go around the ice my wife an I walked straight down the middle of the icy trail with not one slip. Hikers kept stopping us and asking what we had on our feet! If you do any winter hiking these MICROspikes are a must!

So you can imagine my disappointment when one of my MICROspikes’ elastomer bands broke. I notified Kahtoola through an email and within 24 hours I got an email back saying a new pair was on it’s way. They stand by their 2 year warranty and are tops in customer service and satisfaction better than any company I know. These are hands down the best pair of MICROspikes you can get from a company that stands by their product. I have recommended these Kahtoola MICROspikes to many other hikers along the way. Thank you Kahtoola for not only making a great product but for being the best in customer satisfaction and service. HIKE ON!!!

    so far so good

On my second pair and they are still going strong. Pretty much bulletproof. Bought my first pair when they first came out, and wore them out over a period of about 6 years. Repaired the chains with steel wire, old pieces of chain, zip ties, etc., until the rubber finally broke. Second pair is still going strong after 4 years – and I’m really hard on these. They have made great improvements in the chains. Wear them practically every week during the winter season, and also during the summer when crossing old, icy snow fields.

    Beats crampons in most cases.

The company service is the BEST! Great people. Honest, and they go out of their way to help you. Cannot say enough good things about my experience. One of the best gear purchases I have ever made!

  8. David

I bought these to provide traction when hiking icy trails in upstate NY. So far they have performed flawlessly. I have so much traction I worry about being too confident in them. Climbing, descending, across sheet ice, in deep snow. They grip, and don’t get bogged down with snow. I am very happy with the product, and will gladly recommend them to everyone I pass along the trails.

  9. Adam Bradford

I had a pair of Kahtoola Microspikes. I say had because the very first time I wore them one fell off on the trail and I was never able to find it. They should have a fastening strap like other companies have. Instead it’s good money down the toilet.

    • Andrew Wisniewski

Hi Adam. Andrew with Kahtoola here. I’m sorry to hear that this was your initial experience with our MICROspikes. It is an incident that we do see, but very rarely. We’d be happy to help remedy the situation. If you could please email me at andrew@kahtoola.com we can get that process started. Thanks!

  10. Don Phillips

Excellent. Very durable, easy to put on, even easier to get off. Not meant for every style of boot though, so make sure you try them on first. My boots with a stiffer soul probably require the K-10 crampons.

  11. Adam Bradford

Just wanted to add to my 1-star review that Kahtoola reached out to me and provided great customer service in replacing my microspikes. They stand behind their 2-year guarantee and their product and are quick to respond and eager to assist. Thank you Kahtoola!

      Thank you, Adam!

  12. Jim Lanning

I am on my third pair and hope to get my forth. The rubber eyes break after a while. Kahtoola has replaced them but I am not sure they will on this last set. They have made improvements to the rubber eyelets where the chains are held but this last pair broke so I put a piece of bungee cord to hold them together.

The bottom line is these things work and can save you from falling on the ice. I use them for ice fishing and walking our dogs. Minnesota has ice and snow for most of the winter. The micro spikes live on my boots and I love them but they will break after a couple of seasons.

    • Hilary Childs (verified owner)

Hi Jim, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. This does not sound like the norm to us and we would very much like to learn more about your experiences. One of our associates will be reaching out to you in the next 24 hours.

      Best,

      Hilary

    Lifesavers! Really!

I bought my first pair in 2012, and wore them for 6 years straight before deciding I maybe needed a second pair. I wore the spikes right down to nubs, and they still gripped! I leave them on my winter boots at all times, and wear them everywhere I go with my dogs. I’ve gifted pairs of them to every family member, and my parents just rave about them! Some days I wish I could set up a sales booth at the heads of trails to sell them to people. I get asked about them every outing. Well done, Kahtoola!!

  14. Rick Sommerkamp

I’ve had mine for almost 10 years now, and they are by far the best out there to handle any winter situation. Shallow snow, ice, and even wet snow. Raced many winter adventure races through the woods with these. Never let me down. Pretty easy to get on and off too. My wife, who is always terrified of falling, wears these through some crazy nasty trails with confidence. You can even descend on fairly steep black ice. If they do slip, which is very rare, they slip with slow motion control as they claw across the black ice. Plenty of time to adjust your balance. Unlike other traction control devices. They are expensive, but definitely worth it.

  15. Elspeth Wash

The traction is wonderful. Feel completely safe with the spikes. Purchased the Red Medium as I wear a size 9 hiking boot. Very disappointed as I’ve literally used them 3 times and the silicone snapped /tore as I was putting them on to do a hike last week end so had to cinch with Duct tape. Not impressed.

    • Hilary Childs (verified owner)

Hi Elspeth. Hilary here. We’re very sorry to hear about your experience with our MICROspikes. I want to assure you that this failure is not a common occurrence and that we’re more than happy to work with you on this. Please keep an eye out for a personal email from me and we can get things started. Thanks!

  16. Brandon

These spikes work great. I recently had to contact the Kahtoola service department and got amazing service, very few companies have ever impressed me this much as far as taking care of their customers.
    Thanks Cat.

  17. Philipp Wickey

Have had mine for over 5 years and they are still as tough as ever! Thanks kahtoola.

  18. Olen Whitaker

Excellent product, highly recommended. I have had mine for so long that I cannot clearly remember when I got them–at least five years, maybe closer to ten. They are very quick and easy to put on and take off and give markedly improved traction on a variety of winter surfaces including loose snow, packed snow, rough ice, and even glare ice; they have also proved to be rugged enough to wear when passing over even extended stretches of bare concrete, exposed rock, gravel, and mud. After what may have been several hundred miles walked in them across many Alaska winters–in parking lots and sidewalks, over hiking trails, and even up rocky mountain slopes–I never had any trouble with them whatsoever until yesterday when the silicone strap down the side finally broke. Considering how long I’ve had them and both the amount of use and the roughness of some of that use, I definitely feel that I got my money’s worth out of them and I’ve come here to buy another pair, which I hope to have for at least another five to ten years.
