In 2015, during a backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon, Kahtoola Owner Danny Giovale saw an opportunity to make a better gaiter. Noticing how poorly his hiking partner’s leading-brand gaiters functioned, he thought, Why don’t we put a little more design effort into this?
It was also a chance to come full circle to a deep family connection as a customer. The grandson of Bill and Vieve Gore, co-founders of W.L. Gore and Associates, Danny lived through the early years of GORE-TEX laminants and prototyping, regularly taking handmade GORE-TEX chaps and ponchos on family backpacking trips in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, where his love of wild and beautiful places began.
Applying the idea that less is more, we designed gaiters that perform and function at a higher level without sacrificing quality, and improve overall user experience. From materials used, to shape and fit, to ease of use, our Kahtoola INSTA™gaiter, NAVA™gaiter GTX and LEVA™gaiter GTX are lightweight, comfortable, and packable. And most importantly, they’ll take on whatever the trail throws your way.
